This correlational study examines how high school students’ performance on Newsela quizzes relates to outcomes on the PSAT and SAT Reading/Writing assessments.
The study analyzed data from 1,059 students in grades 10–11 in a large, diverse high school district.
Key Findings
This study found that:
- Students scoring 75% or higher on Newsela quizzes were about twice as likely to meet grade-level SAT/PSAT benchmarks
- Newsela quiz scores were moderately to strongly correlated with SAT Reading/Writing scores (r = 0.44, p < .001)
- The relationship remained significant after controlling for race, gender, EL status, and special education status
- Newsela quizzes function as leading indicators of college readiness in reading and writing
